One word can describe the struggling local charities such as the Salvation Army and Durham Rescue Mission – economy.

Since 2008, Raleigh’s Salvation Army donations have decreased 30 percent. Pretty soon, they may have to turn families away if food donations do not come in.

The Durham Rescue Mission is having the same problem. They say their thrift shop has saved them so far. However, they have exhausted every idea to stay afloat.

Both the Salvation Army located on Person Street and Durham Rescue Mission are in need of donations and volunteers.

Do you mind lending a hand?
