It may sound good that North Carolina’s unemployment rate fell from 8.9 percent in July to 8.7 percent in August, but employers in the state are still shedding jobs.

According to the state Department of Commerce more than 3,500 jobs were cut during the month of August and more than 409,000 people in the state remain unemployed.

Analysis says the trend of falling unemployment rates is largely due to the fact that many people have stopped looking for work. Once people without a job stop looking for a job, the government no longer counts them as unemployed.
