Our prayers go to those involved in a fatal van accident of First Missionary Baptist Church in Smithfield.

The incident happened in the area of Zebulon Road and Barham Siding Road, where witnesses say the church van and another SUV swerved to miss a deer.

The driver of the SUV, identified as 62-year-old Deborah Powell of Roxboro, was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger from the church bus, identified as William Henderson Clayton, 84, also died at the scene.

Witnesses told ABC11, “They kept saying someone is trapped up under the water,” the woman said. “As I went to the other side of the van there were people laying on the ground, screaming and hollering. Just blood everywhere.”

A First Missionary Baptist Church official told ABC11 some church members had gone to the Central Children’s Home of North Carolina Sunday afternoon to attend a program and  drop off clothes and food.

ABC11 has confirmed three family members, who were all on the church van, were taken to Duke University Hospital for treatment.
