People in Durham, Wake and surrounding areas are waking up this morning in the dark due to power outages caused by strong gusty winds and heavy rain.

Duke Energy reported this morning that over 8,000 customers are without power.

Over 2,100 customers in Durham alone are in the dark around Northgate mall, near N. Duke Street and Interstate 85.

And more than 1,600 in Wake County are without power. Around 900 of them are in Raleigh’s Cameron Village area, near Hillsborough Street and NC State University. Raleigh Police said two transformers blew because of the wind, causing the outage. It is unclear what is to blame for the other outages.

About 1,300 customers in Harnett County are also in the dark. Duke Energy crew are currently assessing the damage and working to restore power.
