The Multi-State Lottery Association raised the Powerball jackpot from $450 million to $500 million hours before the drawing.
The reason is because more people across the country are buying a large amount of tickets for a chance at the biggest prize in nearly a year.
The current jackpot ranks as the sixth largest offered in North America and the biggest since a $564.1 million Powerball prize shared by players from North Carolina, Texas and Puerto Rico last February.
Lottery officials said North Carolina is a lucky state when it comes to lottery drawings, with four Powerball winners and two Mega Millions winners in the past 10 years.
