According to the head of Louisiana State Police, a Louisiana state trooper found himself fighting for his life Sunday night after being shot in the head by a man whose pickup truck had run into a ditch, and who suddenly got out of the truck with a sawed-off shotgun.  Col. Mike Edmonson said Sunday night that police video depicted Senior Trooper Steven Vincent, a 13-year state police veteran, trying to talk a man out of the vehicle stuck sideways in a ditch.

Edmonson said the video shows when the truck door opened that a man, identified as 54 year old Kevin Daigle, came out with a shotgun.  Vincent suffered major damage when he was hit with at least two or three buckshot pellets.

Edmonson said “His brain is not telling his body what to do.”  After the shooting, Daigle wandered into the road and over to Vincent, to ask him if he was alive.  According to Edmonson “You could hear him breathing, telling him, ‘You’re lucky. You’re lucky you’re going to die soon.’ That’s the words that came out of his mouth.”

Two or three drivers then immediately stopped, wrestled the shotgun away from Daigle, and with the others, they were able to put him on the ground subdue him with Vincent’s handcuffs. Edmonson also said that as far as he knew, the good Samaritans were unharmed.

Daigle faces charges including attempted first-degree murder of a police officer.  According to Edmonson Daigle had “numerous DWIs” and other arrests that he was not at liberty to discuss because it was unclear whether they resulted in convictions.

Sgt. James Anderson, southwest Louisiana spokesman for state police, said Daigle also was in a hospital.  Anderson said “He struggled with the guys who came to assist — had some scrapes on him and so on.”

Anderson said on Sunday police had received calls about a maroon Dodge pickup truck with a camper shell that was driving erratically. Later that same truck was reported in a ditch.

Anderson said Vincent got to the truck at 2:43 p.m.  Vincent has a wife and a 9-year-old son.
