An investigation has concluded that a Raleigh police officer fired in self-defense when he shot and killed Akiel Denkins in February.

Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman said, “The evidence exonerates Officer D.C. Twiddy and makes it clear that he acted in self-defense” during a struggle where Denkins reached for a gun on Feb. 29th.

Denkins’ mother, Rolanda Byrd, said she was upset that Twiddy won’t be held accountable for her son’s death.
