couple from Mississippi was kicked out of an RV space due to what they believe to be a negative view of their interracial relationship.

The Clarion-Ledger reports the incident with Erica Flores Dunahoo and her 37-year-old husband, Stanley Hoskins happened last Thursday (Mar. 31) when they wanted to rent an RV space from Gene Baker. Dunahoo, a mother of two, says she spoke to Baker alone when he approved the couple to rent the space for $275 a month.

When Dunahoo returned with Hoskins, Baker was furious because he didn’t know he was African-American. He also assumed Dunahoo was white when she is in fact, Hispanic and Native American. Dunahoo told reporters Baker didn’t want the couple there he and the neighbors weren’t in favor of interracial couples.

The next day, she said, Baker telephoned her and said, “Hey, you didn’t tell me you were married to no black man.”

She said she replied that she didn’t realize it was a problem.“Oh, it’s a big problem with the members of my church, my community, and my mother-in-law,” she quoted him as saying. “They don’t allow that black and white shacking.” “We’re not shacking. We’re married,” she replied. “Oh, it’s the same thing,” she quoted him as replying.

She said he told her, “You don’t talk like you wouldn’t be with no black man. If you would had come across like you were with a black man, we wouldn’t have this problem right now.” She said she replied, “My husband ain’t no thug. He’s a good man. My husband has served his country for 13 years. He’s a sergeant in the National Guard.”

In tears, Dunahoo says she prayed Baker would change his mind. They even tried to meet with Baker, but he refused. Instead, the family is now renting at another RV park for $325 a month.

Baker tells the Clarion-Ledger that he didn’t have a problem with a mixed-race couple, but to fix the issue, he’s willing to close down the entire RV park before allowing the a similar incident to happen.

Asked if he would rent the RV space if another interracial couple showed up, he replied, “I’m closing it down, and that solves the problem.” Dunahoo said he told her they could attend their church but “we’re not allowed to be members.”

In all of their 10 years of marriage, the couple said they never faced discrimination. The NAACP is currently investigating the incident.

There’s no surprise that interracial couples remain ridiculed in the state. Home to the most populated mixed-race couples, interracial marriage was deemed illegal until 1967. The Supreme Court found banning mixed-race couples unconstitutional. A year later, the Fair Housing Act made it possible for people of color to buy and purchase housing space without prejudice on the color of their skin or origin.
