A Duke University political science professor, named Jerry Hough made what some are calling a controversial statement regarding an editorial in the New York Times.

The editorial that sparked the comment was titled “How Racism Doomed Baltimore” and it focused on the idea that poverty and isolation of the African-American community in Baltimore were major causes of recent riots after Freddie Gray’s death.

Inside the comments section of the editorial Hough said, “blacks get awful editorials like this that tell them to feel sorry for themselves. So, where are the editorials that say racism doomed Asian-Americans? They did not feel sorry for themselves, but worked doubly hard.”

Duke University responded Saturday to the statement by calling his comments “offensive”.
