Lord's Prayer

Earlier this month a federal judge ruled that Rowan County commissioners must stop opening their meetings with prayers that refers to Christianity the majority of the time.

Since the Rowan County commissioners themselves delivered prayers before their meetings the U.S. District Judge James Beaty Jr. ruled that the commissioners violated the U.S. Constitution’s prohibition against mixing church and state.

However, prayers will continue before the Rowan County commission meetings but will now be led by a local pastor who is also serving as the sheriff’s office chaplin.  According to The Salisbury Post the change to the opening invocation to Monday’s meeting comes as the county leaders contemplate their next step in a lawsuit relating to their past prayer practices.
