A lengthy two-year investigation has finally come to an end last Thursday. Authorities filed federal drug and weapons charges against seven current or former Northampton County deputies, three corrections officers and five other individuals. The unlikely team, were planning to move large amounts of cocaine and heroin between South Carolina and Maryland. U.S. Attorney Thomas Walker gave his opinion on the matter during a recent news conference:

“When officers violate the trust that the public has instilled in them, it tears at the very core of what holds a community together,” Walker said. “The people of North Carolina expect and deserve law enforcement officers who will serve and protect, not those who will violate the promises they have made.”

The investigation which was given the alias “Operation Rockfish” (due to Weldon being the world’s “Rockfish Capital”), began with a tip Halifax deputies received two years ago regarding officers of the Northampton County Sheriff’s Office being involved in illegal activity. Local, state, and federal agents all worked together in Operation Rockfish and arrested all 15 individuals Thursday morning.

According to the U.S. Attorney one group was picked up while waiting for a shipment of drugs at the Halifax-Northampton Regional Airport in Halifax and the other was picked up at a Rocky Mount warehouse, also waiting for drugs. All of the arrested deputies have been fired.
