In hollow pandering of the usual kind, Republican presidential hopeful Ted Cruz said on Wednesday that President Barack Obama had “inflamed racial tensions” during his time in office, yet could not provide one example of how.
CNN reports that the Texas senator said Obama fell short on leading on race issues during his two-term presidency while speaking to the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the press in Washington, D.C. yesterday.
“He’s made decisions that I think have inflamed racial tensions—that have divided us rather than bring us together,” said Cruz.
And yet, when a reportedly “visibly emotional” Cruz was pressed to give specific examples of these decisions, he could not do so, vaguely referring to the President’s “tone:
“No. 1, most importantly, it comes to tone and language and rhetoric,” said Cruz, citing Vice President Joe Biden‘s warning to an African-American audience that Republicans would “put you back in chains” during the 2012 campaign as proof of the kind of “incendiary and hateful rhetoric” that splits people apart.
CNN’s own Dana Bash then reportedly came at Cruz once again for a specific example, and got this:
“I think he has not used his role as President to bring us together. He has exacerbated racial misunderstandings, racial tensions, from back at the beer summit to a series of efforts to pit Americans against each other,” said Cruz. “And part of the problem is the way he advocates for any given plan is to paint … is to build a straw man of the opposition and then vilify caricatures.”
Cruz also said the president had vilified people opposed to Obamacare and who are against the Iran nuclear negotiations, but did not give any other example around racial conflicts.
