PhiDeltaRacist_CroppedThe University of Pennsylvania’s Phi Delta Theta apologized on Monday for their racially insensitive Christmas card which showed frat members posing with a Beyoncé blow-up sex doll and pictures of confederate generals prominently displayed in the photo’s background, according to The Daily Pennsylvanian.

The group photo of 29 Ivy Leaguers, all smiles, mostly white, and with their arms locked around each other, appeared on social media on Sunday. At first glance, the photo looks harmless enough, but when peeped again, there is a black female blow-up doll at the top left hand corner which frat members revealed as a Beyoncé sex toy.

Directly behind the frat brothers are built-ins book shelves with a two pictures of a confederate general on top of each.

Although the frat house meant to post a holiday photo that was light and humorous, they failed to do so, as many have deemed the image racist and insensitive.  Amongst the on-campus groups who voiced their disdain for the photo were five umbrella coalitions of minority organizations who are calling for the frat house to be punished.

Phi Delta Theta International Fraternity VP Sean Wagner told The Daily Pennsylvanian there will be a full investigation conducted to determine who is at fault for the racial faux pas and afterwards, an appropriate punishment. There will also be a form of “educational action that will promote reform.”

Meanwhile, Wagner issued the following statement regarding the incident:

“We are deeply concerned by this image,” Wagner wrote. “Phi Delta Theta is a values-based organization and the lack of judgment associated with this image indicates a disconnect from those same values.”
