The line outside of the Nike store stretched down the block long before the ribbon was cut announcing the grand opening of Charlotte Premium Outlets on Thursday. While Governor Pat McCrory, Council member LaWana Mayfield and others made speeches touting how the shopping mall outside was an economic boon to the area, early bird shoppers were anxious to shop.

Everyone on the podium was also anxious for shoppers to use their credit cards, but first the speeches. Mayfield cited how she ensured the mall owners held local job fairs. The mall employees 900 people, and added 400 construction jobs.

“This is creating an opportunity of great shopping of great retailing experience, but more than anything else it’s creating jobs for all of the people of Mecklenburg and all of the people of North Carolina,” McCrory added.

Mayfield, the city council representative for the mall’s district, said it’s the first mall built in Charlotte since 2005.
