Some 20,000 year round students started school this morning in WakeCounty. Many parents have complained about the long bus rides that their kids have to take, with some commutes being over an hour.

School leaders say budget cuts are to blame and they are working to make conditions better.

So far the district has added more than 50 buses to the roads and has hired 120 new drivers, but another 100 drivers are still needed.

The district is offering a new incentive program to help recruit and retain more drivers. Some current transportation employees can make an extra $1,000 if they keep their absences low, and they can get an extra $100 for referring someone who becomes a new driver.
