Shaw 35, Fayetteville State 29 OT
Shaw overcame a 16-point deficit in the game’s final five minutes to rally past Fayetteville State 35-29 in overtime before a capacity Homecoming crowd at Luther “Nick” Jeralds Stadium. Shaw quarterback Quinshon Odom connected with James Pettway on a 17-yard touchdown pass on Shaw’s first possession of overtime. The Bears sealed the win when Broncos running back Colon Bailey fumbled on the Fayetteville State’s first play from scrimmage on its overtime possession. The Bears (2-5, 2-2 in the CIAA) will be at Chowan this Saturday while the Broncos (2-5, 2-2 in the CIAA) will be at Livingstone as the Blue Bears host Homecoming in Salisbury.
Morgan State 52, North Carolina Central 3
Morgan State racked up a season-high 415 yards of total offense as the Bears routed North Carolina Central 52-3 at O’Kelly Riddick Stadium in Durham. Bears running back David Kelly rushed for 142 yards and three touchdowns. A bright spots for the Eagles was the play of senior linebacker Brandon Outlaw who had 12 tackles (six solo), 1.5 for loss. The Eagles (1-5, 0-3) have struggled in their first year in the MEAC, but will try to right the ship as they travel to Hampton, VA on Saturday to take on the Pirates.
Elizabeth City State 28, Virginia State 7
ECSU running back Daront’e McNeill, last week’s Boxtorow National Player of the Week rushed for 189 yards and three touchdowns as the Vikings cruised past Virginia State 28-7 before a standing room only Homecoming crowd at Roebuck Stadium in Elizabeth City. The Vikings outgained the Trojans 432 to 153 in total offensive yards. Elizabeth City State (5-2, 3-1 in the CIAA) will host Bowie State this Saturday. A win for the Vikings and they will wrap up the CIAA Northern Division.
Winston-Salem State 63, Livingstone 7
Winston-Salem State running back Nicholas Cooper rushed for 122 yards and two touchdowns as the Rams rolled past Livingstone 63-7 at Alumni Stadium in Salisbury. The CIAA’s leading offense racked up 381 yards while the league’s leading defense held the Blue Bears to 100 total yards. For Cooper who is the sixth leading rusher in the country (145.3 yards per game) it was his fifth game of the season of rushing for 100 yards or more. (Twice this year he has rushed for more than 200 yards in a game.) The Rams (7-0, 6-0), who are ranked #5 in the Boxtorow National HBCU Top 10 Media Poll and have already wrapped up the CIAA’s Southern Division, will host Edward Waters on Saturday, while the Blue Bears (1-6, 0-4) will host Fayetteville State for Homecoming.
West Georgia 23, Saint Augustine’s 21
Davis Brackett’s 35-yard field goal with no time on the clock split the uprights to give West Georgia the 23-21 victory in Carrollton, GA. Falcons quarterback Teddy Bacote racked up 394 passing yards and wide receiver Jamian Smith caught 17 passes for 142 yards and an 18-yard touchdown with 2:21 remaining in the fourth quarter which put the Falcons up 21-20. Smith broke the modern-day Falcons record for most receptions in a game. Saint Aug’s (2-5, 1-3) will host a game on campus for the first time in 40 years as its Homecoming. Saint Aug’s will get to show off its brand new Field Turf playing surface and a first opportunity to show the community that the stadium in Southeast Raleigh is a good thing, as they host Johnson C. Smith.
Johnson C. Smith 26, Virginia Union 19
Johnson C. Smith defeated Virginia Union 26-19 at Johnson C. Smith’s Homecoming in Charlotte. The Golden Bulls are 4-3, 3-1 in the CIAA on the season. Head coach Steven Aycock was named the CIAA’s Coach of the Week for the third time this season following the victory. The Golden Bulls will look to guarantee a non-losing season for the first time since 2006 when they face Saint Aug’s this Saturday in Raleigh.
