Charlotte will hire Norfolk’s Marcus Jones as its new manager. Jones is currently the city manager at Norfolk. He will be Charlotte’s first African American city manager, according to news reports.

Jones replaces interim Charlotte city manager Ron Carlee. In February, the Charlotte City Council decided not to extend Carlee’s three-year contract.

Jones spent his career in Virginia as the budget director in Norfolk from 2004 to 2007 before becoming Norfolk’s assistant city manager. In 2011, he became the city manager in Norfolk after a stint in with Richmond city government, according to Norfolk.gov.

Although Charlotte has never had an African-American city manager, current Mayor Pro Tem Vi Lyles was the city’s first Black assistant city manager in the mid-’90s. Mecklenburg County manager Harry Jones was the county’s first and only Black county manager before he was fired in 2013.
