Vice President Joe Biden and President Obama

In a moving interview Thursday with Stephen Colbert, Vice President Joe Biden opened up about how grief over the death of his son has weighted his decision to enter the 2016 presidential race.

Biden told Colbert, who recently took over CBS’ The Late Show from longtime host David Letterman:

“I don’t think any man or woman should run for president unless, number one, they know exactly why they would want to be president and, number two, they can look at folks out there and say, ‘I promise you, you have my whole heart, my whole soul, my energy, and my passion to do this.”

He explained that he’s still fragile over the death of his son, Beau, who died of cancer nearly three months ago. While meeting soldiers during a recent outing, he describes becoming choked up over the mention of his son’s name.

“All of a sudden, it was going great, and a guy in the back yells, ‘Major Beau Biden. Bronze Star, sir. I served with him in Iraq,’ and all of a sudden I lost it…  How could you… I shouldn’t be saying this — and you can’t do that.”

Meanwhile, as he weighs a run for the White House, Biden has risen in polls against Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton and liberal Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, according to the New York Daily News:

A new Monmouth University Poll Tuesday found him jumping to 22% among Democrats nationally, leapfrogging Sanders who is at 20% and closing in on Clinton, who remains the heavy front-runner with 42% but has slipped from 52% a month ago.
