Health and Wellness
Jeanne Hopkins Lucas Education and Wellness Center
The Jeanne Hopkins Lucas Education and Wellness Center was established in 2007 in memory of the late senator Jeanne Hopkins Lucas, who was a supporter and advocate for CAARE.
CAARE offers an Integrative Medicine approach to healing, combining holistic, non-invasive, and mind-body-soul techniques with traditional clinical care. The Holistic Center offers acupuncture, EFT Tapping, and massage; as well as reiki, mind-body-spirit, yoga, and meditation classes. There are also a variety of exercise and wellness classes and a free gym with a personal trainer twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
CAARE’s Free Clinic offers a variety of services within itself. There are three clinic rooms served by a rotation of volunteer health care providers, as well as a lab. We focus on the five most severe health disparities in the Durham County area, which are: HIV/AIDS, diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and cancer.
CAARE is an enrollment site for the Diabetes Improvement Project (DIP), created by the African American Health Improvement Partnership (AAHIP).
CAARE is also a Check It Change It site were anyone in Durham County can come to have their blood pressure checked.
The free clinic provides free clinical breast exams, PAP smears, prostate and colorectal exams, and makes referrals for free mammograms, MRIs, and biopsies through our partnerships.
CAARE recently opened a dental room with a digital x-ray machine, and it is staffed by a volunteer dentist. The clinic summer hours are located here .
CAARE is proud to offer Acupuncture services, courtesy of many practitioners (listed below) who volunteer their time.
What is Acu-Detox?
The National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA) auricular acupuncture protocol, or Acu-Detox, has been used since the mid-1970′s used help people deal with and recover from substance abuse and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD.) It is now used around the world and there are many clinical studies that have proven its effect when used as part of a comprehensive treatment of substance abuse. The protocol helps with detoxification from substance abuse, and gives support in dealing with the emotional, physical and psychological aspects of addictions and stress.
The 5 points are: Shen men (Spirit Gate) to help calm the spirit; Sympathetic to help soothe the nervous system; and 3 points to help the body detox: Liver, Kidney and Lung.
What are Acu-Detox sessions like?
At five designated ear points in each auricle (outer ear), clinicians trained to use the NADA points apply fine gauge, sterilized, one-time use stainless steel needles just under the skin, where they remain for up to an hour while the client relaxes quietly in a comfortable chair. Groups of clients sit together while undergoing the treatment. The procedure functions as an adjunct to a comprehensive treatment program offering the basic therapeutic elements of counseling, education, family involvement, mutual support group involvement, supportive health care of general nature.
