North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory (R) recently signed into law a new voter Photo ID requirement that is stirring the ire of African Americans, Hispanics and the civil rights community. Although the law doesn’t take effect until the 2016, many people in the aforementioned communities believe the measure imposes an extra burden on a host of voting groups, including African-Americans, the elderly and college students. The bill will require voters to present a photo identification prior to casting a ballot. Leaders in the civil Rrghts community say the new law amounts to a poll tax. The ACLU among a bevy of other groups have filed a lawsuit to halt the law’s implementation.
