East Carolina University was locked down Wednesday morning after people reported seeing an armed man on a main thoroughfare near the Greenville campus.

The man was seen near the corner of 5th and Reade streets at about 10 a.m., ECU spokeswoman Mary Schulken said.

Campus police, Greenville police and Pitt County deputies systematically swept the campus to search for the man, she said.

A reporter for WNCT-TV in Greenville said police surrounded several city buses with drawn weapons after witnesses reported seeing a man with an assault rifle.

About 27,000 students attend ECU.

Text message and email alerts were issued to students and staff, and they were told to remain in secured classroom buildings and residence halls during the lockdown, Schulken said.

Three nearby schools also were locked down as a precaution – Elmhurst Elementary School, Wahl-Coates Elementary School and C.M. Eppes Middle School. Pitt County Schools officials said they don’t believe the students at any of the three schools are in danger
