Some Durham drivers said repaving many of the city’s roads is long overdue.

Voters passed a $20 million bond referendum on Tuesday that will mean repaving about 150 miles of streets.

City officials said the work should start in April and take until the end of 2012 to complete.

“We need our streets redone,” said resident Kendra Crews.

The referendum will mean a tax hike for city residents that will equate to about $1 extra a month on the average property tax bill.

While some opponents have said the City’s in too much debt already, officials said now is a good time to borrow money because of low interest rates.
