No wonder The Light 103.9 FM radio personality Melissa Wade was all smiles Saturday night while co-hosting the 9th Annual Lamplighter Awards.

You’d be smiling, too, if you’d been pampered the way she was earlier that day.

Massage therapist Cathy Culbreth had rubbed down Wade for a whole hour!

By the way, Culbreth said she’s the massage therapist for Radio One Inc. founder Cathy Hughes when she’s is in the area. Hughes serves as chairwoman of Radio One, which owns The Light, a gospel-music station based in the Triangle. Hughes was at Durham Performing Arts Center for the awards, which spotlights folks and organizations doing good in the area.

Jaz Smith made sure Wade’s hair was fixed right. Wade’s feet got done, too.

Poor Jerry Smith, the program director for The Light. He co-hosted the Lamplighter Awards with Wade but said all the pampering he got was lotion he put on himself.

But that’s how it is with Wade, who hit the books at Northern High School and UNC. And Saturday at DPAC she had folks angling to stand with her to pose for a picture.

“She’s so lovable,” said Jaz Smith, a Durham hairstylist.

“It’s the God in me,” Wade offered.

Wade wasn’t trying to be a holy roller but referencing a gospel song by Mary Mary. Folks aren’t so much responding to Wade as they are being attracted to the spiritual light shining through as she tries to live for the Lord, the radio hostess explained.

After intermission, Wade, still bubbly, returned to the stage in a different dress. Poor Jerry Smith. He toughed out the rest of the show in the same suit he had on when the thing got started.
