Downtown Raleigh’s past comes alive in a vivid new mural by artist Sean Kernick, stretching across Hargett Street in a vibrant spray-painted tribute. Blending art and storytelling, Kernick’s latest work features a collage of influential figures who have helped shape the city’s identity.

The mural includes powerful portraits of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., beloved NC State coaches Jim Valvano and Kay Yow, legendary boxer Jack Johnson, and longtime journalist A.C. Snow. It also honors press workers, photojournalists, and Frank Daniels Jr., a key figure in Raleigh’s media history. Adding a playful nod to the city’s nickname, a giant squirrel — a symbol of the “City of Oaks” — anchors the composition.

Each character in the mural symbolizes a milestone in Raleigh’s cultural and historical journey. Kernick’s creation isn’t just a piece of public art — it’s a living timeline that celebrates the voices, struggles, and achievements that define Raleigh’s unique spirit.
