Police announced charges on Monday against three teenage girls in the death of Amy Joyner-Francis, who was assaulted in a Delaware high school bathroom, CBS News reports.
According to the site, a statement from the Delaware Department of Justice said the student accused of beating Joyner-Francis, 16, faces a charge of criminal negligent homicide for the April 21 attack.
The other two suspects, who allegedly helped plan the assault, are charged with third-degree criminal conspiracy. They are charged as juveniles and could receive up to a year in prison.
But prosecutors are seeking to try the girl who attacked Joyner-Francis as an adult. She could be incarcerated for up to eight years if convicted.
State authorities said they met with the victim’s family on Monday to explain the charges, and issued this statement, via CBS News: “The individuals responsible for Amy Joyner-Francis’s death are minors, but they must be held accountable for their actions.”
Sherry Dorsey Walker, a family representative, spoke on Monday to WPVI-TV: “At the end of the day, nothing brings Amy back so whatever the charges are, their issue is Amy is never coming home.”
According to WPVI-TV, a video shows the 16-year-old suspect repeatedly punching the victim in the head and body at Howard High School of Technology in Wilmington.
On Monday, officials also revealed that the medical examiner determined Joyner-Francis died from a “cardiac incident,” CBS News reports. The victim had a pre-existing heart condition, which was triggered by the assault.
