The winter storm has moved into the area and sleet, freezing rain and snow is coming down over the triangle area right now… DOT workers are out and attending to any icy and slippery areas. Because it seems like we are getting more ice than snow.  But with the prediction of ice and wind gust – power outages could be very likely so make sure you are prepared with flashlights, candles, alternative heating and batteries … I have posted information from Duke Energy Progress in case of power outages near you call 800-419-6356.

  • Raleigh Durham International has already canceled some flights.
  • Governor McCrory said the Highway Patrol will mark disabled vehicles on the roads and the DOT will push them to the side to try and prevent traffic jams.
  • Watch generators they could become serious risks such as carbon monoxide poisoning, electrical issues and fire. Place generators outside and at least 15 feet from home with exhaust pointed away.
    • Here are more TIPS
  • DRIVERS:
    • Watch speed on roads if you have to travel out. Driving too fast reduces the amount of time you have to react and increases chance of bad collision.
    • 4 Wheel drive vehicles drives better in snow but not ice.
    • Don’t follow too closely
    • When you feel your tires slip don’t panic and slam on brakes.
      • How to take a hill:Get some momentum before you start up a hill, and let it carry you to the top. Avoid hitting the gas pedal on the way up because it can cause your wheels to spin. Once you’re at the top, reduce your speed and descend slowly.
      • Skid recovery:If your car starts to skid, steer it in the direction you want the car to go. Avoid slamming or pumping the brake pedal.
      • Getting stuck:Stay with the vehicle and don’t walk outside in severe weather. Keep the dome light on, because it uses a small amount of electricity and attach brightly colored cloth to the window. Conserve gas by turning the engine on only periodically to warm the car. Again, make sure the tailpipe is clear of snow.
