A 19-year-old Indiana University student has been arrested after allegedly yelling “White power” and “kill the police” before physically attacking a woman, reports The Washington Post.
Triceten Bickford was charged Saturday with battery, strangulation, and public intoxication after the attack on the woman who “may have been Muslim,” according to police in Bloomington, Indiana, the report says.
From The Washington Post:
Bickford was also heard making “derogatory statements about African Americans” before he attacked the woman, who was sitting outside at a local restaurant, police said in a news release.
The woman, whose 9-year-old daughter was with her at the time, told investigators that Bickford “began squeezing her neck and forcing her head down toward the table,” according to the release.
“While doing this with his right hand, he was using his left hand to attempt to remove the scarf from her head,” the release stated. “This caused the scarf to restrict her breathing due to the pressure on her throat.”
The teen, who was subdued by a passerby and the woman’s husband who was inside the restaurant, is a sophomore at the school, a university spokesman told the Post in an email.
Neither the woman nor her daughter required medical attention. The case is being investigated by local police, as the attack occurred off campus.
