Yesterday tens of thousands of North Carolinian’s who’ve been out of work for more than six months will lose their long-term state unemployment benefits. Republicans say the new law, which cuts the maximum unemployment benefit by one-third, will help the state pay off its debt to the federal government. The law also disqualifies people from using the federal emergency unemployment compensation program, which can extend benefits up to 37 weeks.
