As snow continued to fall across central North Carolina on Sunday morning, meteorologists upped their forecast for the amount of snow the Triangle and Sandhills would see.

WRAL meteorologist Mike Moss said earlier predictions of 3 to 6 inches in the region have been changed to 4 to 7 inches to reflect the rapid pace of snowfall. The northern coastal plain of Interstate 95 corridor are still expected to see 5 to 10 inches of snow, he said.

Bands of snow remained in Johnston County and down toward Goldsboro and Sampson County for much of Sunday morning, WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said.

“It continues to look quite impressive,” Gardner said of radar images of the storm system. “It just amazes me to watch how much snow continues to fall so heavily across the area for so long.”

The rapidly falling snow made it difficult for road crews to keep highways and major thoroughfares clean, officials said.
