Tennessee Titans Honor Mandisa With Fisk Singers Performance

The Tennessee Titans honored the life of Mandisa this month. Two weekends ago, they invited the Fisk Jubilee Singers to perform during halftime. Mandisa was a member of the Fisk Jubilee Singers, graduating from Fisk in 2000.

The choir sung two songs—“Steal Away to Jesus” and “Ride On, King Jesus.” Ahead of their performance, Mandisa’s uncle spoke about her enduring legacy and love for the Titans. Mandisa performed The National Anthem three times at Nissan Stadium and was a season ticket holder for the Titans.

While at Fisk, Mandisa studied music and eventually connected with audiences as a contestant on season 5 of “American Idol.” She finished the competition in the top 9 alongside other season 5 favorites like Katharine McPhee, Kellie Pickler, Chris Daughtry and eventual winner Taylor Hicks.

After appearing on Idol, Mandisa released her debut album “True Beauty” in 2007. The album debuted at no. 1 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart. She was the first new female artist to accomplish that feat and ended up earning her first Grammy nomination for best pop/contemporary gospel album.

Mandisa released five more album during her career, including 2013’s “Overcomer.” She won a Grammy Award for best contemporary Christian music album in 2014 for that project.

A few years before her untimely death, Mandisa worked to improve her mental and physical health following a bout of depression. In 2017, she released an album “Out of the Dark” plus a 2022 memoir “Out of the Dark: My Journey Through the Shadows to Find God’s Joy.”

“When you are walking through this, you think that you’re the only one,” she told PEOPLE at the time. “But you are never the only person walking through something like that.”

Mandisa was found dead by friends on April 18. Her cause of death was later revealed as class III obesity.
