A Chicago man has been charged with first-degree murder after he allegedly disguised himself as a meter inspector to fatally shoot his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend, reported the Chicago Tribune.
“The actions of the defendant were cold, calculating and pre-planned,” Judge James Brown said during a hearing for Willie Bell, 44, on Tuesday afternoon.
“The only reasonable order would be an order of no bail.”
Surveillance footage caught Bell dressed as a meter reader approaching the home of Timothy Lawrence, 48, last fall.
Apparently last year, the two men were dating the same woman, but the woman ended her relationship with Bell to only be with Lawrence. This angered Bell causing him to post several angry statuses about Lawrence on his Facebook page, says prosecutors.
According to the Trib, on Sept. 5, 2015, Bell was captured on surveillance photos at a local Home Depot buying a reflective workman’s vest and helmet. A week later, he went to Lawrence’s home and since Lawrence didn’t know Bell, he let him inside believing Bell was an actual meter inspector. Around an hour later, Bell left the house and drove away in Lawrence’s car.
Police say that Bell bought gasoline at a local gas station and returned back to Lawrence’s house with another person the next day. Hours later, someone called 911 when the house caught fire and exploded. When the firefighters arrived, they found Lawrence’s body badly burned and shot in the head. Fire officials stated that they found fire accelerant in the house, including under Lawrence’s body.
An autopsy determined that he died of a single gunshot wound to the head, which was later ruled a homicide. In addition, during the investigation, Bell’s DNA was found in Lawrence’s car and his cellphone records showed his phone pinging in the area of the victim’s home.
Bell was also charged with home invasion, concealing a death, residential arson and possession of a stolen motor vehicle.
Now, this isn’t Bell’s first run in with the law: He has prior convictions for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance, armed robbery, aggravated discharge of a weapon, unlawful use of a weapon and trespassing, DNA Info wrote.
