Durham’s Fire Department consists mostly of white men and officials are working to make their department more diverse.
Currently the department is: 71% white males
19% black males
1% Hispanic males
3% women
Deputy Chief Chris Lannuzzi says recruiting times are typically announced through word of mouth, so it’s usually announced to the friends and relatives of the majority that are already apart of the department; white males. Minorities and women don’t often consider the fire department because they have no knowledge of it.
The Durham Fire Department has also started a high school fire academy to appeal to potential candidates earlier in life.
