Authorities said a small-town police officer was killed by his cousin with his own gun after being called in to calm a domestic dispute.  Sunset Police Chief Luis Padilla claims that 51 year old Henry Nelson was killed Wednesday, a day before he planned to leave for a month’s vacation with his teenage daughter.

According to St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz, 40 year old Shameka Johnson was also killed, who along with her sister 34 year old Shurlay Johnson had tried to protect Courtney Jolivette Riley from her husband, 35 year old Harrison Lee Riley Jr.

Parish confirmed that Shurlay Johnson was in critical condition and Courtney Riley’s condition was stable. Harrison Riley, who faces murder charges, is currently under arrest at a hospital.

The Associated Press says that Padilla revealed late Wednesday that Riley and Nelson were cousins. According to Padilla Nelson had worked for the 14-person law enforcement agency, which consisted of six police officers including the chief, since 2002.

Guidroz claims that Harrison Riley will be booked with first-degree murder of a police officer,  a specific crime which also carries a possible death penalty.  All three women were stabbed, so Riley will also be charged with the attempted first-degree murders of the other two women.

The Johnsons are sisters of Grand Coteau Mayor Shaterral Johnson, whose town is a mile from Sunset.  Guidroz said Riley drove from the house in Sunset and into a convenience store about three blocks away, barricading himself in an office and telling police that he wouldn’t come out and was ready to fight.

According to Guidroz, then SWAT team members threw tear gas into the building and afterwards broke in using hammers and fire axes to arrest Riley.  The sheriff said Harrison Riley was kept in a hospital for observation because he said one of his ribs hurt.

The violence started with an argument between the Rileys at a house which belonged to the Johnsons’ mother.  Guidroz said “He began stabbing the Johnson sisters when they intervened to protect his wife. Officer Nelson arrived, and a fight ensued.”

Riley is originally from New Orleans and has an extensive criminal history there.
