A 22-year-old man had an unfortunate ending to his Fourth of July after trying to launch a firework off the top of his head which killed him instantly.

Stephen McCausland, a spokesman for the state Department of Public Safety said Saturday night Devon Staples and his friends had been drinking and setting off fireworks in the backyard of a friend’s home in eastern Maine when Staples placed a reloadable fireworks mortar tube on his head and informed his friends he was going to light it. Even though friends urged him not to Staples still ignited the firework and was killed instantly.

According to the Daily News of New York Staples’s brother Cody said that he was a few feet away when his brother lit the firework and was the first to come to his side after it exploded.

Cody also said “There was no rushing him to the hospital. There was no Devon left when I got there.  Devon was not the kind of person who would do something stupid. He was the kind of person who would pretend to do something stupid to make people laugh”.

Authorities said that Devon’s death is the first fireworks fatality in Maine since the state legalized fireworks on Jan. 1, 2012.
