Rachel Dolezal, one of the most prominent faces in Spokane, Washington and head of the local chapter of the NAACP has made headlines for an entirely different reason today.  Rachel’s racial identity is under question after her parents produced a Montana birth certificate and photo that showed that she is actually white.

In the past, Dolezal has represented herself as being at least part African-American.  She is not just president of her local NAACP chapter but also an academic expert on African-American culture in which she teaches many related classes at Eastern Washington University.

Rachel is a spokeswoman for the black community publicly and vocally on race-influenced police violence as well.  The question regarding her racial identity started on Thursday when a reporter from KXLY inquired about the race of her dad and held up a picture that shows her standing next to an older African-American man.

She previously posted this picture on the local chapter’s Facebook page when her father was supposed to visit but it contradicts the photo that her parents produced which shows both of her parents being Caucasian.

Rachel’s mother Ruthanne Dolezal spoke with the Spokesman-Review on the issue saying that:

“It’s very sad that Rachel has not just been herself.  Her effectiveness in the causes of the African-American community would have been so much more viable, and she would have been more effective, if she had just been honest with everybody,”

According to the Spokesman-Review, Rachel Dolezal claimed the controversy surrounding her racial identity was due to part of a family fight over alleged abuse.  Dolezal refused to answer the newspaper’s questions about her racial heritage directly and said she wanted to talk to local NAACP leadership first before commenting any further.

The Spokesman-Review quoted Dolezal as saying “That question is not as easy as it seems.  There’s a lot of complexities … and I don’t know that everyone would understand that.”
