School board members from Wake County are considering adding “sexual orientation” to the district’s discrimination policy.  Sexual orientation is already included in the district’s bullying and harassment policies.

The current policy prohibits discrimination based on a variety of factors, including race, religion and disability. Most of Wake schools policies have already been altered to align with recommendations from the North Carolina School Boards Association.

Adding sexual orientation to the policy is part of an effort by Wake school officials to streamline its policies.  Wake County school board member Jim Martin had this to say about the possible new addition to the current policy:

“Sexual orientation is something people have become more aware of.  It has been something that we have been cognizant about with regard to bullying aspects for many, many years, and it is time to go ahead and put it in policy.”

An actual date to vote on the addition has not been released.
