A rare joint action with attorneys general for each of the 50 states occurred in which the Federal Trade Commission revealed that four cancer charities are actually shams.  All four of the organizations are run by extended members of the same family.

The organizations conned donors out of $187 million from 2008 through 2012 and almost none of those profits were spent on actually helping cancer patients. Chief of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, Jessica Rich says that the charities spent about 97% of donations they received either on private fundraisers or on themselves and only 3% went to help actual cancer patients.

One of the charities, The Cancer Fund of America is run by James Reynolds Sr. His son James Reynolds Jr. is the CEO of the Breast Cancer Society and the Children’s Cancer Fund of America is run by Rose Perkins.

Perkins is the ex-wife of the elder James Reynolds in which he is also the CEO of the fourth charity, Cancer Support Services.  According to the government the charities claimed to provide direct support for breast cancer patients and children with cancer.

Rich commented on the issue by saying “Most of what we are doing is bringing actions against fraud, and this is as about as bad as it can get: taking money away from cancer victims.”
