The school, located at 600 Burton Ave. SE, currently serves more than 400 students in preschool through ninth grade but will add a grade each year until 12th grade.

“We are extremely thankful for Amway’s support to build a KaBOOM! playground for our student-artists,” said Sapp, a Grammy-nominated artist, who said news of the 3,500 square-foot playground has brought a lot of joy to the student body.

Ellington student-artists will participate in a Design Day on Thursday, April 17, in which students will imagine, design and draw their dream playground. Elements from the drawings will be incorporated into the final design for the playground.

“It is gratifying that community partners are connecting with the Academy’s mission to promote discovery and imagination through art and technology,” said Israel Ausua elementary school principal.

The new playground is expected to be built Friday, June 13, 2014. More than 200 volunteers will spend a six-hour build day shoveling and tightening bolts to construct the playground.

The playground is the 15th that Amway has built in conjunction with KaBOOM! and the 12th in the greater Grand Rapids region, according to GREAAT. Information about the cost of the project was not released.
