The trial of Crystal Mangum could be affected by an SBI investigation into an official in the N.C. medical examiner’s office who was fired.
The Charlotte Observer reports that the State Bureau of Investigation is looking into allegations that a top official with the N.C. medical examiner’s office mishandled evidence important to a seperate homicide investigation.

State Justice Department spokesperson Noelle Talley told the newspaper that the SBI’s review has focused on allegations against Dr. Clay Nichols, who serves as the state’s Deputy Chief Medical Examiner. Nichols was fired.
Nichols was expected to testify in Mangum’s trial.
