A bipartisan group of senators has reached an agreement on the principles of sweeping legislation to rewrite the nation’s immigration laws. That comes as North Carolina battles over whether driver’s licenses should be issued to “dreamers,” or undocumented youths who’ve been granted a reprieve from deportation under the federal Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

Four Democratic senators and four Republicans, including Lindsey Graham from South Carolina, proposed this deal that covers border security, guest workers, employer verification, as well as a pathway to citizenship for 11 million illegal immigrants already in this country.

Dozens of young Latino adults who entered the country illegally as children staged a number of protests last week after the NC Department of Transportion stopped issuing licenses to the so-called “dreamers.”

The state attorney general said those who received those temporary work permits meet a state law requirement that non-residents seeking driver’s licenses must certify their legal presence in North Carolina. So far, there’s no word from NC Transportation Secretary Tony Tata on what he plans to do.

Meanwhile, Sen. John McCain and Sen. Menendez went on the Sunday talk show circuit saying the time for immigration reform is now.
