A task force created by Gov. Perdue will meet Tuesday to make a final recommendation on how to compensate the victims of North Carolina’s eugenics program.

Prospective amounts have ranged from $20,000 to $50,000 per victim. Between 1929 and 1974, the state sterilized 7,600 people. It’s estimated that 2,300 victims are still alive in North Carolina.

Any recommendation would need to be approved by the General Assembly.
