A young Moore County boy is in the hospital after he was hit by a pickup truck while trying to cross the street to his school bus

The boy’s mother, Karen Maness, said her son, 8-year-old Slayton Maness, suffered a set back with a stroke on top of his injuries, but she’s holding out hope for his recovery. He remains in critical condition and is attached to a breathing machine. She says the main surgery needed at this time is to repair his fractured neck at UNC Hospitals.

“I have seen this truck every day, I go up there every morning at 6:30 a.m. and drop my kid off and watch him get on the bus safely, and this is one day it didn’t happen,” said Karen Maness.

Highway Patrol Troopers say the accident happened as Maness crossed North Moore Road to his school bus around 6:40 a.m.

They say Slayton, who attends Robbins Elementary School, walked into the path of the truck which was driven by Billy Joe Binkley. According to witnesses, the flashing lights on the bus were illuminated.

Charges will not be filed against Binkley. Guidance counselors will be at Robbins Elementary to speak with students who knew Slayton Maness.
