Republican Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina announced that he will not seek reelection next year, stating that the decision was “not a hard choice” and expressing a desire to spend more time with his family. Tillis also voiced concern over how proposed cuts to Medicaid could affect his constituents.

His decision comes amid tensions within the party, as former President Trump had previously threatened to support a primary challenger against Tillis after the senator voted against advancing a key Trump-backed bill.

Tillis’ departure puts his North Carolina Senate seat—critical for Republicans to maintain their narrow majority in the chamber—into sharper focus heading into the next election cycle.
