A dating website that helps married people cheat has been threatened to close by hackers who claim they will release information about the sites millions of customers. On Monday, Ashley Madison the dating site that uses the slogan “Life is short. Have an affair,” said some of its user’s data was stolen.

Brian Krebs is the blogger who first reported Ashley Madison’s breach in cyber security. He said the hackers who call themselves the “Impact Team” were threatening to release all Ashley Madison’s customer records if the site isn’t shut down.

The potential information that could be released includes “profiles with all the customers’ secret fantasies, matching credit card transactions, real names, addresses, employee documents and emails.”

The parent company Avid Life Media, released a statement that said:

“At this time, we have been able to secure our sites, and close the unauthorized access points. We are working with law enforcement agencies, which are investigating this criminal act.”

The site has 37 million members, and in the past has bragged about its data security.

The Impact Team of hackers, appear to be upset over the company’s “full delete” service, which promises to completely delete a user’s profile, and all associated data, for a $19.

Krebs published a quote the hackers left that said:

“Full Delete netted [Avid Life Media] $1.7 million in revenue in 2014. It’s also a complete lie. Users almost always pay with credit card; their purchase details are not removed as promised, and include real names and address, which is of course the most important information the users want removed.”

On Monday afternoon, Avid Life Media defended the service, and even said it would make it free. The company also said that it had hired “one of the world’s top IT security teams” to work on the breach.
