Mexico started it’s manhunt Sunday after powerful drug lord, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, who according to officials escaped from a maximum security prison through a 1 mile long tunnel from a small opening in the shower section of his cell.

The underground escape route was allegedly built without the authority’s knowledge. According to National Security Commissioner Monte Alejandro Rubido, 58 year old Guzman climbed down a hole 30 feet deep that connected with a tunnel about 5 feet-6 inches high that was fully ventilated and had lighting.

Police also found tools, oxygen tanks and a motorcycle which had been altered to run on rails that they suspect was used to carry dirt as well as tools in and out.  The tunnel leads to an unfinished barn-like building in a farm field.

According to the federal Attorney General’s Office thirty employees from different parts of the Altiplano prison have been taken in for questioning. Guzman’s cartel is believed to control most of the major crossing points for drugs at the U.S. border with Mexico.

Michael S. Vigil, a retired U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration chief of international operations made it clear that he feels if Guzman is not captured immediately he will be back in command of the Sinaloa Cartel within 48hours.  If recaptured Guzman faces multiple federal drug trafficking indictments in both the U.S. and Mexico.

Guzman has found his way on the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s most-wanted list as well as the Forbes list, since he was estimated to be worth more than $1 billion.  U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch issued a statement affirming that she will lend “any assistance that may help support his swift recapture.”

According to Guatemala’s Interior Ministry, a special task force of police as well as soldiers has been assembled to watch its borders along with southern Mexico for any sign of Guzman.
