After month of consideration the Wake County school board made a decision on a new Superintendent of schools for Wake County during yesterdays evening meeting.

Jim Merrill, superintendent of Virginia Beach City Public Schools, was named Tuesday night as the new superintendent of Wake County schools.

Merrill used to work in the Wake school district for 16 years as an English teacher in the 70’s and says, “It really is very exciting and an honor for me to be able to return to Wake County as superintendent,” … “I don’t think any of you can appreciate what it means to me.”

Board chairman Keith Sutton says it was a great decision, but the choice was not unanimous. Board members Deborah Prickett and John Tedesco voted against the selection.

Merrill says he will begin his tour of school by visiting some of the year round schools in August.
