Discussions could get heated Tuesday as the Wake County school board resumes debate on how to assign students for next fall.

It was supposed to be the third year of a three-year plan that would offer students stability but some members want it to be the first stage of the major reassignment plan to create neighborhood-based schools.

Last week, staff recommended the reassignment of about 3,200 students, and although some board members wanted as many as 6,000 students reassigned to schools in their neighborhood, the board voted to block most changes beyond what the staff has proposed.

The staff’s recommended plan would affect 35 elementary schools, 17 middle schools and five high schools. Letters are supposed to be sent out to families whose neighborhoods would be affected.

The plan was presented the same day the U.S. Department of Education began an investigation into the school system in response to an NAACP complaint that accuses the school system of racial bias due to the elimination of the diversity policy.
