According to officials a student was killed during a shooting outside a Texas Southern University student housing complex, and two people have been detained for questioning.  University President John Rudley says the student was a freshman at the school and the student’s name, age and gender haven’t been released.

Houston police spokeswoman Jodi Silva claims the other person who was shot is hospitalized and in stable condition.  However that person’s name and condition also haven’t been released.

Silva says the shooting occurred in a parking lot outside the University Courtyard Apartments, which is on the edge of the school’s Houston campus. University spokesman Kendrick Callis said the campus was placed on lockdown earlier and classes were canceled for the rest of the day.

Houston Police tweeted early Friday afternoon that a possible suspect had been detained.  Police and emergency vehicles were at the scene, where there had been another shooting near the same housing complex just hours earlier.

According to Silva two people have now been detained, but that a motive remains unclear. A third person is being sought for questioning, but that there is no active shooting investigation.

Rudley says the school is no longer on lockdown and classes will resume Monday.  The university has about 9,700 students.
