Sam Houston State University (known as SHSU or Sam) was founded in 1879 and is the third oldest public institution of higher learning in the State of Texas. Serving over 19,000 undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students, SHSU’s Carnegie classification places it in the top 7% of U.S. higher education institutions.
Sam Houston State University Soul Lifters is the oldest collegiate gospel choir in the state of Texas, founded in 1971 by seven students who felt the need to start an organization to reach believers and non-believers through singing praises to God. We are still going and growing strong.
