Feb 21 April-Holmes

Holmes was a high school 400-meter champion and later earned multiple NCAA All-American and CIAA honors as a sprinter at Norfolk State University in Norfolk, VA. When she lost her leg in a train accident in 2001, she turned tragedy into triumph. Holmes has made remarkable strides as both an athlete and advocate for individuals with disabilities, and started the April Holmes Foundation to assist persons with physical and learning disabilities overcome challenges against all odds. Holmes is back competing as a Paralympian and won a silver medal at the International Paralympic Committee World Championships. Recent highlights of her career include breaking the world records in both the 100m and 200 within two hours of each other. She completed the 2003 outdoor season being ranked #1 in the world in both the 100m and 200m. Holmes we inducted into the CIAA Hall of Fame in 2009.
